LESLEY POWELL
Lesley’s paintings often center around village scenes or urban landscapes. Whenever
possible, she enjoys painting scenes while she is experiencing them in person.
Often this involves working outdoors, or “en plein air.” Plein air painting presents unique challenges to an artist, including fast-changing
light and weather conditions. Adapting to these challenges, Lesley finds that
working on location allows her to capture patterns of light and shadow, and brings
a sense of vibrancy and immediacy to her paintings.
Lesley also loves to paint the human figure. Her figures range from the tranquil
to the energetic, but all convey a strong personal presence. She seeks out subjects
engaged in everyday activities, and brings to them a sense of the universal. Lesley also paints still lifes and interiors. Her still life and interior scenes
have a beguiling sense of intimacy, and they derive their impact from working
directly with familiar places and cherished objects.
Lesley and her husband live in
Charlotte ,
North Carolina , and travel frequently. The paints and easel always accompany her on her travels! Lesley has studied at workshops with renowned plein air painting master Kevin
Macpherson in his native
New Mexico , as well as with
California plein air artists Ken Auster and Peggi Kroll Roberts. She has also studied with
Charlotte artist Connie Winters, and studies on an ongoing basis with Andy Braitman at
the Braitman Studio in
Charlotte .
